Introduction

     This study aims to get more information about the discussing a Highway Project. First of all, we will try to discuss the design & construction stages of the highway projects. Then, we will try to summarize the required data to evaluate a Highway Project.  

Design & Evaluation Stage

A Highway Project needs a long design period. It has a number of stages;
Research of the geography,
Determination of traffic volume and future demand,
Decision of the path,
Decision of the project speed,
Geometrical design of the highway,
Decision of the type of the pavement,
Pavement design,
Design of the required engineering structures,
Hydraulic & Hydrological Calculations, Design.
We assume that the discussing highway project has a completed project.  If we have the project, we will study on;
The length of the highway,
The geological report of the land,
Material Requirements of the pavement,
Search on providing bitumen,
The amount of Earthwork,
The balance of cut and fill,
Transportation distance,
Proper locations of additional fill material,
Proper locations of stone quarries for the crushed stone, aggregate requirement of base & pavement,
The capacity of required asphalt plant,

Type and capacity of the required stone breaker,
Capacity of required concrete plant,
Decision on the other required machinery,




Engineering Structures

Engineering Structures topic is an important stage of the design & evaluation & construction periods of a highway project. We may divide this topic into two stages as “big engineering structures” and “small engineering structures”.  Big engineering structures are especially need to be examined in deep, hence they might be required different technology than traditional, or they mostly have to be planned as a special part of the highway project. 
We assume that the design stage of the engineering structures of the discussing highway project has completed. Hence, when we have the projects, we will study on;
The quantity of engineering structures,
Determination of the critical engineering structures,
Questioning of the required technology, formwork type.
Hydraulic & Hydrological Structures

Another important topic of highway work is the design and construction of the hydraulic & hydrological structures.  It is generally the first step of the construction, since those structures are mostly under the highway. It is the prior step of earthworks. 
We assume that the design stage of those structures is completed for the discussing project. Hence, when we have the projects, we will study on;
The type of culverts (pipe or box),
The required formwork of those culverts,
The quantity of the culverts,
Type and length of the trenches,
The quantity of under base drainage works,
Type of drainage pipes,
Other Works

Existing electrical lines or any other infrastructure on the highway path has to be considered. If there is a situation mentioned above, replacement of those lines have to be analyzed and budgeted.
Requirement of guide rail locations and quantity need to be checked,
 Determination of slope stability structures and quantity,
Steel works of engineering structures,
Quantity search and material determination of joints, membranes,
Design and material determination of traffic signs,
Design of traffic lines,

Planning

Determination of the construction camp area,
Determination of the proper stone quarry,
Installing the stone breaker and starting to break stone,
Installing the concrete plant,
Starting to excavate the vegetable soil zone,
Starting to build Hydraulic & Hydrological structures,
Earthworks start,
Engineering structures start,
Slope stability structures start,
Installing of the asphalt plant,
Starting the production of base structure,
Starting the pavement works,
Finishing works.


Summary & Unknowns

This study has been done to get contact with the Highway Authority for the discussing highway projects. As the project team of X Construction Company, we need to know the above explained data of any project before commenting on it. We tried to give an overview data of highway design & construction periods. Since, each project has its own requirements; this report might have some missing data.  Before completing the study, we would like to summarize the unknown and important points;
Do you have a geographical research of the land?
Have you determined the project critters?
Do you have data for the current and future traffic demand of the highway path?
Have you determined the design speed?
Do you have statistical data for the climate of the path?
Have you determined any stone quarries suitable with your pavement design?
Do you plan to supply this stone quarries and required fill deposit areas to the contractor?
Are there any infrastructure existing at the highway line?
Do you have projects of engineering structures, slope stability structures and hydraulic & Hydrological structures?
Do you have a decided project calendar?
